"Either an administrative process which is a more rapid process if the information is very clear and there's little question, or they'll do a more deliberative trial," he said. If Pell faces a canonical trial the process would happen in private, ecclesiastical law and religious liberty expert Mark Hill QC said.
"In effect what it will do is it will strip him of his clerical state … so he will no longer be regarded as a priest at all and he will be stripped of that and frankly, the sooner the church acts the better for the sake of damage limitation."
