Across Australia psychologists are reporting waiting lists for new patients that are many months long. Here are the stories of those left waiting for care.

Her son would shut himself away in his room and struggled with remote learning.He was told he would have to wait until April next year for an appointment.She was able to organise a one-off appointment with a Sydney psychiatrist early this month.

Helen says it has been a relief to see her son's mental health improve but says it shouldn't take a personal connection for parents to be able to get the care their children need.In Victoria, sexual assault survivors have reported long waiting times to access publicly funded mental healthcare support. One woman told the Law Reform Commission she had been waiting nine months for an appointment.

Centre Against Sexual Assault chief executive Kathleen Maltzahn wants to see more funding for mental health services for sexual assault victims. Until then, she says emergency care for people who have been recently sexually assaulted will be provided quickly, but she worries about delays in ongoing support services.

She says the pressure the mental healthcare system is now experiencing is an issue that has been brewing for some time. Professor Hickie from Sydney University agrees the pandemic has had a significant impact on the mental health of Australians, but he warns that ending lockdowns won't solve all the nation's growing mental health concerns.
