But Mr Lawless said Darwin remained the most affordable capital city to buy a house, based on a ratio of housing values to household incomes.
A typical household in Darwin is spending about 4.6 times their gross income to buy a medium price house.Mr Lawless said the affordability of buying houses in the Territory could be seen in the high proportion of first home buyers, who comprised 50 per cent of owner-occupier mortgage demand early this year, according to housing finance data.
Although data shows the Territory continues to have the highest rate of first home buyers in Australia, the rate recently dropped to 43 per cent, indicating many are being priced out of the market. Quentin Kilian, chief executive of the Real Estate Institute NT, said the withdrawal of first home buyer incentives by the NT government had "cooled the market quite dramatically".Stamp duty is also a big roadblock for potential first home buyers, who stoke rental increases if they can't buy."There is very little room to save and rental prices are going up," she said.
Why did public housing put up market rents by like $80 a week where there’s heaps of other public housing in area and problem with covid? Surely this adds to the problem of others increasing rent and people not being able to buy a home?
It’s the landlords property…..he can do as he wishes. Maybe they were paying a low rent to start with.
Pisses me off when people increase fees for anything when they can’t evidence theirs increasing. Rates are at an all time low, the cost of labour is stagnant. There’s zero evidence for such an increase. Time for meaningful regulation.
