The number of Australians arrested overseas is on the up, rising by a quarter in the past five years.

The US, Thailand and China were the top three countries where citizens fell foul of the law, with a total of 1572 cases of arrest and immigration detention around the world in 2018-2019.

"Australians should be obliged to know and understand the laws of the countries in which they're travelling, they won't be the same as Australia, there are differences all over the world and so the importance of knowing what the laws are where you are going, what you're required to do is very, very important," Senator Payne said.

The Philippines and Indonesia replaced the UAE and Japan as the fourth and fifth most likely countries for Australians to be arrested. Most deaths were from natural causes or illness and happened in Thailand, which is in the top five most-visited countries by Australians. Some deaths also took place in the period before April 2018, with DFAT providing consular support over months or years.

Well dont commit crimes overseas then. Respect laws and customs of other countries and you wont get arrested, its not that hard

Good if MarisePayne implements an outbound video for Australians on airlines travelling abroad. Plenty of time in the plane or while sitting in departures or waiting to clear immigration . Handout cards at immigration for travellers to read

then why did the media only fall in love with Schapelle Corby and why don't we hear of all these 1500 cases?

Yea. Bogan behavior doesn't translate well overseas.
