It was a row over a horse race that started it. The last race, the Fifteen Hands Handicap at Randwick on Thursday, August 26, 1895. Merry Girl came first. The bookies paid out but the mare was then disqualified in a dispute for carrying 2½lb over weight after her jockey had weighed in carrying his whip.
