He said that, in 2017, he had no knowledge of any processes pertaining to new contracts for the following year.One of the most senior officials heading the Durban Solid Waste unit in eThekwini testified that he had no knowledge of any new contracts in 2017.The senior official, who cannot be named due to a court order by Judge Sharmaine Balto, said his seniority was sidelined and, instead, a position parallel to his was created for his subordinate, Robert Abbu.

He, along with some of his senior staff, was concerned as to how services would operate after some service provider contracts ended on 30 November 2017. He said this became a problem when staff members were allegedly threatened by the workers of old contractors.Rubbish in the area was largely left uncollected, with reports of municipal workers being threatened at gunpoint.
