The World Health Organization has warned of the risks of returning to lockdown if countries emerging from pandemic restrictions do not manage transitions 'extremely carefully and in a phased approach'.

Geneva/Zurich - The head of the World Health Organization on Wednesday warned of the risks of returning to lockdown if countries emerging from pandemic restrictions do not manage transitions "extremely carefully and in a phased approach".

"The risk of returning to lockdown remains very real if countries do not manage the transition extremely carefully and in a phased approach," he said at a virtual briefing in Geneva. The Geneva-based body has been accused of being "China centric" by top donor the United States, which has cut off funding to the body.

WHO epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove said that the agency was discussing a further "academic" mission to China to look at the virus origins.
