This weekend's Bundesliga matches behind closed doors might have been the first time that an entire match day was played under such conditions in Germany, but it is something that has happened elsewhere.
In April 2009, the Mexican football league ordered three games in the capital, Mexico City, to be played behind closed doors. A week later, they said that all professional matches – down to the third division – would be played without spectators. Castilla CF, who are Real Madrid’s reserve side and play in the second division, sensationally made it to the final of the 1980 Copa Del Rey, where they were beaten 6-1 by the mother club, so to say.
Defender Alvin Martin recently told the English media that he remembers club officials coming to the team at half-time and asking them to “tone down” their voices because what they were saying on the field was being heard by all 262 people in the stadium.
