The Downs women’s team made history yesterday with their 3-0 victory over the Black Rhinos Queens of Zimbabwe in the final of the Cosafa Women’s qualifiers at King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.Downs women will represent the southern Africa region in the first competition of its kind, which takes place in Egypt later this year. Eight teams from the CAF regions will compete in the continent’s premier women’s tournament.
Striker Melinda Kgadiete bagged the top goal-scorer of the tournament gong with five goals. She was unable to add to her tally after scoring the winning goal in the semis. Sundowns Ladies have dominated local women’s football for years and now they have shown that they can be counted among the best on the continent.
