AFP/Ebrahim HamidTensions between Sudanese protesters and the Transitional Military Council are growing after the former broke off talks with the army and the latter ordered the protesters to dismantle barricades they had erected on the roads leading to military headquarters in the capital Khartoum.

The protesters broke off the talks after accusing the TMC of deliberately delaying the much-promised hand over of power to civilian rule, and trying to install Islamists from the former regime of Omar Al Bashir into a new transitional government, the East African reported. Sudan’s new military ruler General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan voiced dissatisfaction with protesters, setting up checkpoints and searching those who came to the sit-in.Monday’s demand by the military for the roads to be reopened comes as the opposition calls for an escalation in the protests that have engulfed Sudan since last December over rising prices and accusations of political mismanagement.
