Despite the impact of provincial dynamics and the new three-ballot system, it would take a lot to unseat the African National Congress, says the political scientist at the University of Pretoria.It has been three decades since the historic free elections ushered in an era of peace and the promise of prosperity. Yet, inequality is greater than in 1994 and 40% of the population are jobless.

Four of the largest provinces – Western Cape, Free State, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal – are where South Africa’s election will be fought, as voters shop around for new solutions to longstanding grievances.The uMhkonto weSizwe Party is facing backlash and legal challenges by the ruling ANC. Zuma’s appeal against being barred from running for the elections due to a 2021 prison sentence has succeeded, and the party is growing in support.
