Phaahla concerned about monkeypox in SA, as country records fifth positive case | Citypress

On Friday, he gave an update on the government response to monkeypox and the fight against Covid-19. He said that on Tuesday the country recorded its fifth confirmed positive case of monkeypox in a 28-year-old man from Johannesburg, who had travelled to the Netherlands and Spain.

The minister said there were no links between any of the first four cases, while efforts are being made to establish if there is a link between the fourth and fifth cases since both individuals visited the same country, Spain, which has so far recorded more than 5 000 monkeypox cases and two deaths. There is currently no monkeypox vaccine in South Africa, however, three main vaccines are used worldwide to treat the disease.
