OPINIONISTA: The battle for the soul of South Africa: Where power really lies By Ben Turok

It seems that President Cyril Ramaphosa’s repeated calls for unity in the ANC are falling on deaf ears. The clique around former president Jacob Zuma is brazen and not afraid of supporting him publicly, and that includes Ace Magashule, the ANC secretary-general. The question arises: what real power does this group exercise within the ANC and the state broadly? This issue becomes increasingly important since critical decisions are going to have to be taken as divergent pressures build up.

Ramaphosa has enormous power as president of South Africa. But Magashule has a great deal of power asAs president, Ramaphosa appoints his Cabinet and through his ministers is in control of the public service, army and police. He appoints the premiers of the provinces and through his ministers, he controls the state-owned enterprises.

He also works in tandem with the deputy president, who is the head of the deployment committee which places selected individuals in key positions throughout the state system. This includes heads of state-owned enterprises, the chief whip of Parliament as well as chairs and whips of committees. This gives the SG enormous power, especially over Parliament since the chief whip reports regularly to him.

OPINIONISTA: The Mkhwebane judgment: Parliament must now do its jobThose who have been shouting about the need for constitutional compliance have not simply been engaged in an exercise of political opportunism. They, with the balance of the country, must surely now say to Parliament – we cannot have a person in such an important office who misrepresents under oath and deliberately obfuscates critical facts. Fusek. Let her finish her job.

OPINIONISTA: Our job is not to save the ANC from itselfSouth Africa cannot be held ransom to the ANCs hegemony any longer. If there truly is a good ANC and a bad ANC, then the party ought to split. The President has taken the Public Protector’s findings on review. We note this and recognise his right to do so. But what also needs to happen now is a thorough examination of the exorbitant funding mechanism of the ANC’s leadership race. MmusiMaimane No your job is to save SA.
