President Ramaphosa and the Nelson Mandela Museum CEO, on his left, unveil the late struggle icon's statue at the Nelson Mandela Museum in Mthatha.President Cyril Ramaphosa said that honouring the late struggle icon, Nelson Mandela, by unveiling his statues at Qunu, Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape, an area Mandela held close to his heart, was something that the presidency has been working towards for some time.
The president hailed Qunu as the place where the first seeds of Mandela’s political consciousness were planted, where Madiba’s imagination was first stirred, and where his great mind began to be shaped. Ramaphosa explained that the two most important days in one's life are the day they were born and the day they would find out why.
“Madiba’s was no humble contribution. He led our nation to freedom, and even today, many years since his passing, his legacy lives on,” Ramaphosa added. “There are many monuments paying tribute to Madiba across South Africa, across Africa and in many parts of the world, from Palestine to the United Kingdom, Seychelles, Senegal, Cuba, the US, Brazil, China, France, and many other places.”
