Voting in Zimbabwe Extended Following Poll DelaysZimbabweans went to the polls on Wednesday August 23, 2023 for general elections. Incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF) is facing off against 11 other candidates. Deutsche Welle reports that voting stations were supposed to open at 7am local time and close at 7pm, However, reports of delays of up to eight hours at some polling stations have triggered accusations of manipulation. New Zimbabwe reports that Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa said the delay was ploy to "steal" his urban vote. The Herald reports that Mnangagwa, using his powers under the Electoral Act, announced on Wednesday night that voting would continue on Thursday from 7am to 7pm in wards in Harare and Manicaland. The lead-up to the polls saw Chamisa put pressure on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission over the printing of ballot papers in an effort to curtail a repeat of alleged rigging during the 2018 polls. "We want to see the voters' roll you are going to use and that voters' roll must be authenticated so that we are not going to be surprised on the day. We want the ballot paper for the president and the MPs to be given to us as samples, so that we validate them," Chamisa said.
