South Africa Headlines News

Whichever alliances emerge after 29 May, the idea of the ANC hastily abandoning its longstanding policy positions to protect fragile partnerships remains rather fanciful.

In just over six weeks’ time, South Africans will head to the ballot box and state their choice of who should lead the country for the next five years.

Since then, the fragmentation that resulted in new parties emerging from the ANC itself and other factors have contributed to the decline in electoral support over the years that saw it polling just 57.5% in 2019 and performing even less-impressively in the 2021 local government elections.

The linking of the currency movements to the political developments seemed to suggest that there is a fear that a strong MK Party will be a significant roleplayer in the formation of the next government, and given the views expressed by Zuma on the MK campaign trail, might have an impact on the national political and economic agenda.

If one assumes the historic trends will hold, the main parties behind the ANC will be the DA, the EFF and the resurgent IFP.
