A bad season always forces a squad rebuild. Kaizer Chiefs are once again set to announce the departure of at least two existing players.

It is not yet guaranteed if the 36-year-old Khune will retire or leave Amakhosi to continue playing elsewhere. What is certain is that the club confirmed Khune will not sign another contract as a Kaizer Chiefs player. The club added that the Ventersdorp-born star will move towards a coaching and marketing role.

“Kaizer Chiefs’ longest serving player and Club captain, Itumeleng Khune, has been handed a new contract which will see him play for Amakhosi for one final season, taking his professional career to two decades,” the club“Khune, who spent five years in the Chiefs development structures before being promoted to the senior team in 2004/05 season, will be in the Gold & Black as a member of the Chiefs first team for a 20season – which is a new record for Chiefs.

“While Khune will be involved in training and preparations for matches as a player, he will also use this year to broaden his technical acumen, as he transitions into a new coaching and ambassadorial role working with the marketing division at the Club,” the note added.Additionally, another senior player, Hlanti, is facing an expiring contract deal. With May starting on Wednesday, Kaizer Chiefs are yet to offer a new deal for the 33-year-old left-back.

“It’s a difficult situation when it comes to Hlanti because they will have to find a suitable replacement for him,” a source told the“But, what I hear is that they don’t have any intentions of keeping him. The main issue here is money, and another thing is that Hlanti is injury prone. Once he gets injured he stays out for a long time. The scouts have been searching for players for some time now and there are about two players that have been identified already.

“It will be a miracle if he stays because I think he even knows that he is in his last days at the club. So, he will be meeting with the board during the break to discuss his future. I don’t think he is ready to leave, but he will have to accept anything that comes out of the meeting,” the source concluded.
