How family ties relaunched Gamede’s Banyana career | Citypress

When the 23-year-old player was sidelined due to injury last year and went back home to Ixopo in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands, she would cry herself to sleep, unsure of when she would return to action.

Gamede is in Morocco with the Banyana squad preparing for their opening match of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations against the all-conquering Super Falcons of Nigeria in Rabat at 10pm on Monday.Despite missing the better part of last year’s games, Gamede was selected in the 33-player preliminary squad last month.

Gamede missed the momentous occasion of Banyana pulling off a big upset when they beat Nigeria 4-2 to win the inaugural Aisha Buhari women’s invitational tournament in Lagos last year.She added: Gamede, who is clearly a valuable asset to have in the squad in the eyes of Ellis, was a surprise name in Banyana’s final squad for the World Cup in France in 2019.
