'I couldn't feel my feet any more because I only had a blanket and a piece of cardboard to sleep on in the cold,” said a Khayelitsha grandmother who slept outside her local Sassa office since Tuesday to be assisted. CapeTimesSA lockdown

With the Sassa Eerste River office closed after a staff member tested positive for Covid-19, residents travelled to Khayelitsha to be helped.

“I was surprised to see the time moving with no one saying anything to us, and we figured we would have to sleep there and be the first ones on Wednesday. “I haven’t been assisted,” she said yesterday. “I can’t come back tomorrow because they only deal with social grants on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Sassa spokesperson Shivani Wahab said the Khayelitsha office had experienced a high influx of clients since operations resumed on May 11.

Wahab said a queue management system and an appointment system were in place and all clients at the contact point were duly assisted.

CapeTimesSA How sad is this, the elderly are forgotten

CapeTimesSA If you want to see how good/bad a particular Nation is, look at how it treats/ill-treats its young ones and the elders 👯‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♀️

CapeTimesSA What's also sickening is that they queue for that & have to then go queue at shopping chains since it will be month end.. That day alone becomes a shift to the poor old citizen..a full 8 hour plus shift standing(some more since they star queuing at 6)..it's sad really is.

CapeTimesSA I know can't compare SA to UK but I'm pointing it out so that just maybe Lindiwe Zulu take a trip there to see & learn how efficient they're doing it.. It really is sickening to see old people be made to have no choice in a world that's said to be evolving.

CapeTimesSA Also social pays are done in the UK..to Foreigners(obviously EU passport carriers & not upon immediate arrival into the UK) even but you never see these long tiring demeaning queues of peoples rendered helpless..

CapeTimesSA ..but over time it will eventually be a norm that not everyone will queue up on the 31st(also not likely that many of them get it on the 31st) to stand long endless tiring queues only to be served on the 3rd, really.

CapeTimesSA ..that will be efficient less demeaning on the dignity of many senior citizens & it will be a mindset issue to accept that, since many are used to getting cash month end..

CapeTimesSA ..why not incorporate technology to only inform & allow a certain number of recipients through sms 1st time until it's eventually a norm to come queue & collect on different days..

CapeTimesSA Disgusting service as usual by the government

CapeTimesSA State knows every region's pay point they know how many recipients it serves, they have data base of who has a cellphone who doesn't..they know daily how many recipients' cash can be disbursed....

CapeTimesSA Don’t vote for the ANC. Learn from this once and for all!

CapeTimesSA We should explore options to assist those in need of social assistance to access those benefits. Is it not possible for major banks & retailers to set up terminals to register for social security benefits? I don’t understand this standing in queues nonsense.

CapeTimesSA What is with this media bashing of CT? News24 et al You telling me these things don’t happen anywhere else? These offices were closed during LockdownSA and I recall that Our_DA was requesting that GovernmentZA please open them to asap to assist. Journalism has become trash

CapeTimesSA Heartbreaking that a gogo must degrade herself like this. Has she not suffered enough? Is she not worth a bit of dignity in her old age? Can't believe this

CapeTimesSA It really pains me to read this in post Apartheid South Africa.

CapeTimesSA Can someone there in the Cape Town area assist this woman please

CapeTimesSA So sad.

CapeTimesSA Next time don’t vote for the ANC. PROBLEM SOLVED

Rapinoe: ‘I want the biggest, baddest post ... [that of US president]’Women’s World Cup star Megan Rapinoe, an outspoken critic of US President Donald Trump, says she wouldn’t rule out running for America’s highest office herself one day. An idiot! It had its 15 minutes of fame in a pathetic competition of feminine soccer. I wonder what this lady did to deserve the greatest executive position in the world. Well, why not. They've now had a cowboy and a crook, so it's time to give the ladies a role model as well. Although, her hair's a bit short to imitate Barbie, she's not at all puerile, and sounds too intelligent to fit the current US Presidential mould.
