Fish River Canyon hikers struggling with limited water, but NWR says 2024 trips should go ahead

Hike rs will again need water handouts and purification tablets to get through the Fish River Canyon this year. This is far from ideal, given days of 40-degree-plus heat and the shortest possible route of 70 kilometres, with little shade and no swimming holes for respite.

Although sometimes sporadic, water is typically available on the iconic hike that follows Africa's largest canyon. This water usually means hikers can reduce their bag weight by refilling bottles along the route and also enjoy refreshing dips in the soaring temperatures.
