South Africans are now choosing canned pilchards as their protein source compared to chicken, according to a new report from the Competition Commission.

Examining price shifts, egg prices surged by 26% per gram in March 2024 compared to the previous year, though they remain the second most economical protein source. However, besides eggs, which were affected by the avian flu outbreak, inflation across protein sources remained moderate throughout 2023.All these come with a full dose of nutritional value, from the fish's skin, which is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, to its bones, which have good amounts of calcium.
