The Cogta minister has defended the government's apparent U-turn on the ban on cigarette sales, saying the decision was a collective one that came after public comments.

Dlamini-Zuma said when President Cyril Ramaphosa announced last week that cigarette sales would be allowed under the reduced restrictions, he “spoke for the collective”. And now, she said, the collective had decided that the ban should remain in place.Dlamini-Zuma insisted that smoking was hazardous to the lungs, which may compound the effect of the coronavirus on the respiratory system.

“We are a government that is responsive to people, even if it takes a decision and people say they don’t like that decision,” she said. “I don’t think you can say the measures we are taking to save people's lives are draconian. It’s the virus that’s draconian because it affects people — it kills people.”That was in relation to the regulation that allows for exercise within a 5km radius only between 6am and 9am.

Economic development minister Ebrahim Patel said maintaining restrictions on many sectors of the economy under the lockdown has been “some of the toughest decisions we had to take”.

It is draconian accept it, you are misleading the people, something is horribly wrong and until we have faith in government we withdraw our Goodwill

I wonder if she understands that being overweight (as she is) is just as dangerous as smoking? Will she immediately force everyone to diet too?

Well done minister. The companies are definitely going to benefit because no smoking will be allowed at work because of the restriction of cigarettes and tobacco.

So 0.003% of the population can dictate to the government what to do?

Ridiculous, my children must go to school, sitting with 35 other kids in class but I cant buy siggarettes! Smoking is not a social event. We dont have 'smoking parties'

“Not draconian “ what is this then? Game of Thrones?

So... It's a type of science that obviously only exist in SA, since no such ban is seen elsewhere.

Orwellian: “We are a government that is responsive to people, even if it takes a decision and people say they don’t like that decision.”

Yah that Dragon lady I believe she is smoking something. She was high.

DlaminiZuma don't listen to white people.. Your job is to save black lives...

Says the dragon lady.
