Residents of Dube and Meadowlands seek alternative means of getting water on 18 March 2024 in Soweto after Rand Water experienced a system collapse.
Fourteen million people in four provinces and several cities, including Johannesburg – the financial capital of the country and the African continent – who depend on Rand Water for potable water face the risk of increased water shortages and supply disruptions as the water utility struggles to cope with demand.
News24 can reveal that Rand Water, Africa's biggest water utility, is facing a double whammy – on one end, the company's old and dilapidating infrastructure is struggling to cope with potable water demand. On the other end, the company is running out of water as excessive demand by urban users is beginning to outstrip the yield of the Integrated Vaal River System, from which the utility sources raw water.
And now officials have warned customers that between now and late 2027, when Phase 2 of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is expected to be completed, they should expect"water supply challenges".South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
