State-owned insurer Sasria this week said cost of public protests has more than doubled in 2017/18

But the insurer, which was established in 1979 to protect businesses and municipalities from losses related to riots, strikes, terrorism, “civil commotion and public disorder”, said it was “more than adequately” capitalised to meet rising claims related to public protests.

“We’ve always taken a view that we need to have more capital than what is required because unrest is unpredictable,” he said. “Government should never be called in to inject capital.”Sasria makes about 20% of its premiums from individuals; the bulk is related to businesses. Most countries have a Sasria-type insurer, but, said Masondo, most of their claims relate to terrorist activities. In SA, however, 80% of claims relate to public service protests.

In 2018 the insurer was knocked by claims relating to the truck drivers’ protests in Mooi river. Masondo said that the bulk of claims related to damage caused to cars and trucks, but the higher value claims related to the destruction of property and trains. This may now see the insurer hike premiums.

MTN, Cell C hiked the cost of voice calls - while offering what appeared to be freebiesTariffs filed with regulator Icasa show that MTN increased the standard cost of a voice call while offering what appeared to be a big freebie. Meanwhile Cell C customers will have to phone a lot of other Cell C customers to benefit from what appears to be a 200% bonus airtime offer. BISouthAfrica I once raised this issue with MTN and they ignored me. They offer free airtime only to take all your remaining airtime in less than 10 minutes. Call/use R6 and get R55 free. If you are left with R100, it will all go with R55 freebies! BISouthAfrica MTN is no longer the same company, only interested in turning a profit. Customer comes last. Customer services is useless, they really dont value their customer base. BISouthAfrica Don't punish them, it discourage investor confidence !
