CHARMAIN NAIDOO: The unbearable loneliness of lockdown

My frail, 82-year-old Godmother, who lives alone in a windswept cottage on the edge of the Irish sea, e-mailed me this week. She gave a spirited account of the myriad ways her food delivery man is finding to avoid contact with her: leaving her bags in the garage , the back stoep , the sun porch .

I found a 2018 survey done in the UK that found more than 9-million adults in that country were either often or always lonely. I am finding social isolation to be a double-edged thing: to be cherished for the quiet time it offers and, in the exact same space, to be feared for the void that is the silence

An interminable decade later, aged 32, they married and moved into a tiny apartment above a bicycle shop. My mother, who was warm and tactile, who touched an elbow to sympathise, who hugged with ease — those embraces I miss most — who held hands with those who were sad, who shook shoulders to emphasise a point … my mother would not have been very good at social-distancing.So I understood my Godmother’s uncharacteristic small voice complaint coming through the ether from Northern Ireland. She was lonely and it made her anxious, and restless, and uncomfortable. And sad.

Teachers employed by SGBs could receive no salaries if parents don't payThe COVID-19 lockdown has placed significant financial burdens on many parents. Hence I keep saying, that the thought process of this Lovkdown was short of a comprehensive pre-feasibility report from the advisory committee. If the President extends the Lockdown, school fees won't be paid. Parents will not willingly just not pay fees if they receiving their full salaries. FULL salaries must trickle from the top down.
