Bafana youngster Hlongwane savours his rapid rise, targets Chiefs scalp on Sunday

This has been the incredible journey for the 21-year-old, who when he is wearing his prescription glasses off the field, can be mistaken for a school head boy. But when Hlongwane is on the pitch his knack for netting all-important goals belies his inexperience.

The moment I joined the Maritzburg United SAB League [third tier] team, I could feel this was the breakthrough I was yearning for. He recalled netting a brace on that day, a feat that earned him a ticket to attend trials at Maritzburg United. “I believe my time will also come, like I did when I eventually made a breakthrough into the PSL. Everything is well on track and I am happy at Maritzburg.”Hlongwane said he was grateful to Bafana head coach Hugo Broos for tasking him with leading the national team attack.

Although he is yet to score for Maritzburg this season, he said there was still room for improvement after eight appearances.
