The proposed renaming of East London Airport to King Phalo Airport has been met with resistance from some traditional leaders in the province, who claim it is undermining them.

This comes after the Eastern Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee published proposed new names for four places on August 27.

Last week, AmaGqunukhwebe’s Pato royal family met in Tyolomnqa to discuss their objections to the name after the committee gave the public 21 days to raise objections. “I raised the name of Chief Pato because he was a warrior who fought many wars around this area, including in the area where the airport is situated. East London Airport is on the very land that Chief Pato fought for, occupied and died on. His grave lies next to the airport. Why is it being named after another person?” asked Nongenile.

Nkosi Limyile Tungu, chairperson of the Pato royal family, said it was a resolution of AmaGqunukhwebe to name the airport after their late chief. Nolwandle said they had provided submissions to the committee on name changes, which included the rich history of Pato and the nation of AmaGqunukhwebe.Gloria Fundisa, counsellor to Nkosikazi Nongenile Pato, alleged Pato’s name had been rejected because it was proposed by a woman – Nkosikazi Nongenile.

“At that stage, there were three names proposed for the East London Airport – King Hintsa [also an AmaXhosa king], Steve Biko [Black Consciousness movement leader] and King Phalo. During these hearings, the name of King Phalo was the main name that was being pushed,” she said.
