Egypt captain Mohamed Salah netted the winning spot-kick to put his country into the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals with a penalty shoot-out victory over Ivory Coast on Wednesday.
Five minutes later, Badra Ali Sangare was called into urgent action when Amr El Soleya fed the ball into the feet of Salah in the box and his well-struck snapshot forced Sangare to show his agility as he tipped the ball over the bar. The Elephants survived a double scare ten minutes before the interval after an unmarked Mostafa Mohamed was denied by Sangare. Soon after, Egypt's veteran goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy was called into action to keep out Ibrahim Sangare's acrobatic volley.
Patrice Beaumelle's side responded. The corner was whipped in from the right to the back post for Ibrahim Sangare to head back into the centre of the box for Haller, whose close-range header was superbly tipped over the bar by the fingertips of El Shenawy.
