The fire affected the Old Assembly and the National Assembly buildings, causing extensive damage to key offices, chambers and meeting rooms.

A fire broke out in the early morning of 2 January 2022 and continued burning for at least three days.More than 300 men and women were deployed and worked tirelessly over 70 hours to contain the blaze. This resulted in the 2022 State of the Nation Address being moved to Cape Town City Hall, a first in the history of South Africa's constitutional democracy.

Police detectives managed to link a man called Zandile Mafe to the catastrophic fire and arrested him that same day.The accused made a brief pre-trial appearance in November after being a no-show at two previous pre-trial hearings. At the time, State Advocate Mervyn Menigo said that the prosecution was ready to proceed with the trial, however, Mafe's lawyers told the court that they were not ready to commence with trial as more time was needed to consult with the accused. In August, the new secretary to Parliament, Xolile George, said that it would cost over R2 billion and take at least three years to restore Parliament to the way it was before the January fire.

He said that the national legislature would also receive another R118 million to deal with interim relocation costs and to prepare for its refurbishment.

Is just a waist of tax payers money to restore that Colonial establishment.

CyrilRamaphosa comon....just stop it now. I'll do the whole job for 1.5bn and throw in a extra couch. Be that guy. Tell SA you saved them 500mil.

Smallanyana Advise, buy the King George Hotel and refurbish it into Parliament, it's in Gauteng Province. Costs saved as all Ministers can be housed within the Precinct. Its nearer to the Union Buildings.

2 BILLION?!! WTF?!!!

It’s fine we don’t need it … didn’t do anything for the people anyway

Sbwl the 2bn tender

2b? Kdlalwa ngathi mos

lindsaymanthey R1,8 billion being divvied up between the cadres. No doubt.

Who made money in Parly restoration?

It's a restoration of an old building, not a new power station.

Overly inflated costs

Who's gonna get tenders, ANC combrades

ParliamentofRSA can remain like that for next 5 years it’s not a priority, there’s no revolutionary decisions being made in that Apartheid relic GPDRT_ potholes potholes potholes potholes potholes potholes potholes potholes potholes in 9 provinces

Don't restore it.

2 billion to fix fire damage? We are being taken for a peos la

The person who burned it should not be released from jail. He should just consider jail as his home forever. If they release him he'd do the same thing again to the parliament or anywhere else. He's a danger to South African Property.
