2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: Kaapse Draai: Bo-Kaap switches sides as gentrification battle rages on By Suné Payne SunePayne

, ANC Youth League provincial chairperson Muhammad Khalid Sayed applied for the Bo-Kaap to have provincial heritage status. Shortly after this, Arts and Culture minister Nathi Mthethwa announced plans for areas in Bo-Kaap to have national heritage status.would be officially gazetted as national heritage sites.

Poking identified land for housing, economic tourism and high crime rates as factors that were not addressed while attention was on heritage protection. When the city held a meeting about employment, Bo-Kaap’s representatives were not there, despite the suburb being a hub for tourism and heritage within the CBD, said Poking.Additionally, Poking added, “the people of Bo-Kaap are not stupid… people made informed decisions… they are tired of the disrespect” – including an instance where it took three years for a speed bump to be built outside a school.

2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: DA post-elections reckoning: Maimane leader till 2021, but party review to followDA leaders spent Monday behind closed doors in the discussion of the party’s disappointing election results — before emerging with the confirmation that leader Mmusi Maimane would remain in his position. But a comprehensive review of the DA’s structures and processes, last undertaken 15 years ago, is to follow. becsplanb Helen Zille's 'back seat' driving the DA is sorely needed right now. She is still the most astute politician of a bad bunch. Many people voted for the DA this time as a last ditch attempt to stem the black nationalism tide of the ANC/EFF. DA are in for a bigger shock in 2021.

2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: The world dissects South Africa’s latest electoral foray, but not entirely accuratelyThe just-completed South African election proved a challenge for foreign reporting as the question at hand was not really about who was going to win. Accordingly, foreign journalists often fell back on the old standbys of describing this starkly divided society, a tale of two cities, but on a national scale. Once the results were in, what those results mean for the future now becomes the next challenge for observers – just as it is for every South African, including its president.

2019 ELECTIONS AFTERMATH: White anxiety and the rise of the Freedom Front PlusThe FF+ slogan, ‘Slaan Terug’ (Fight Back), and its media managers’ digital and physical campaigns in the party’s green, orange and white posters, which mimic the colours of the old Afrikaner republic ‘Vierkleur’ – four-colour flag – saw its election plans fly. The party hurt the DA’s ambitious campaign to win three provinces – but, as one observer notes, most Afrikaners still voted DA. ferialhaffajee I'm not a VF+ supporter but saying their logo resembles the Vierkleur is a bit of a stretch. Only green (different shade) and white (which doesn't really count) are common to both. Cope, with red too, is closer to the Vierkleur!

The pollsters have had their say, and on 8 May it’s up to the 26, 736,803 registered voters to cast their ballots before 9pm when voting stations close. And then the count’s on.
