Ukraine could declare neutrality and offer security guarantees to Russia to secure peace “without delay,” President Zelensky said — though he said only a face-to-face meeting with Russia’s leader could end the war.

LVIV, Ukraine — Ukraine could declare neutrality and offer security guarantees to Russia to secure peace “without delay,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said ahead of another planned round of talks — though he said only a face-to-face meeting with Russia’s leader could end the war.

The Ukrainian leader has suggested as much before, but rarely so forcefully, and the latest remarks come as the two sides said talks would resume Tuesday. “We must come to an agreement with the president of the Russian Federation, and in order to reach an agreement, he needs to get out of there on his own feet … and come to meet me,” he also said in an interview that Russia barred its media from publishing.

In an overnight video address to his nation, Zelensky said Ukraine sought peace “without delay” in talks due to get underway in Istanbul. That location was agreed after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, the Turkish leader’s office said. Negotiators are expected to arrive Monday.

In Stoyanka village near Kyiv, Ukrainian soldier Serhiy Udod said Russian troops had taken up defensive positions and suffered heavy losses.“But, here it’s not like in Crimea. We are not happy to see them. Here they suffer and get killed.” In fact, Russia’s invasion has most Americans at least somewhat worried that the U.S. will be drawn directly into the conflict and could be targeted with nuclear weapons, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Zelensky opens the door for Ukraine neutrality in Russia peace dealZelensky said today that Ukraine is prepared to discuss neutrality — meaning it could not join NATO — in a 90-minute video call with Russian media, which Russian authorities had warned reporters not to participate in. Speaking in Russian throughout the call, Zelensky said: 'Security guarantees and neutrality, non-nuclear status of our state. We are ready to go for it. This is the most important point.' The real sticking issue is not neutrality but territory... Zelenskiy is demanding a return to the pre-2014 borders that include DNR/LNR & Crimea... it's very unlikely that Ukraine could win a referendum on those territories voluntarily coming back under Kyiv's control. Russia treating its war dead in Ukraine worse than when 'dog or a cat dies': ZelenskyUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the Kremlin's handling of Russia's war dead on Sunday, saying the Russian government's treatment of its soldiers killed in action is worse than how one handles a dead car or dog. Putin sent Zelenskyy “garbage bags” for the corpses of Russian soldiers. It’s wrong to go against people’s peace. And he will build a huge monument in the middle of Warsaw with his body for Russians to kneel at, or at least those who still believe in God. The others will salute.
