. Over Peraza’s last 10 games, dating back to September 2, the infielder is now hitting .375 . That brings his batting average this season up from .129 to .208.
Whether he finishes this season on a high note or not, Peraza is still on the bubble when it comes to the Yankees’ starting lineup for 2024. Either he starts at third base , he moves over to second base or he’s relegated to some sort of reserve role, if not shipped back down to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
It all comes back to his offense, though. Peraza’s glove will be fine, but if he’s going to play third base, or second for that matter, his offensive numbers need to improve. Factoring in this September surge, Peraza is hitting .236 with a .643 OPS over 57 MLB games dating back to last fall. That’s not going to cut it, but the potential to turn his production into that of a quality everyday infielder is in there.
It’s no wonder Peraza is having this type of stretch now that he’s compiled a solid amount of big-league at-bats, reps that are invaluable in bringing the best out of the prized prospect. That’s what this promotion was for, a call that gives the kid a chance to stock up on big-league at-bats, the part of his game that has plenty of room to grow at this level.
