HRW’s latest report calls on democracies to show bold leadership to tackle challenges like Covid-19 and quash the rise of autocracy

Autocratic leaders faced significant backlash in 2021, but democracies will flourish only if their leaders do a better job of addressing global problems, Human Rights Watch said in itsThe rights body said there is a dire need for democratically elected officials to show bold leadership in the face of challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic and looming climate crisis.

“There is a narrative that autocrats are prevailing and democracy is in decline,” Roth writes. “[Yet] if you look at the trends in human rights over the last 12 months it doesn’t look so rosy for the autocrats.” HRW cited the emergence of “unlikely” opposition parties willing to form alliances to remove corrupt governments or challenge repressive leaders as another sign of weakening autocratic rule.
