A top rights activist feels populist autocrats could be facing a turning point as people learn that stirring words don’t always translate into action, but he says democratic politicians will have to step up with “visionary leadership.”

FILE - Demonstrators protest against the military junta's arrest and charging of National League for Democracy party lawmakers, Mandalay region Chief Minister Zaw Myint Maung and Mayor Ye Lwin, outside Aung Myay Thar Zan Township court in Mandalay, Myanmar, Feb. 18, 2021.

In a video interview, Roth highlighted three places that top his long list of concerns for the coming year: Ethiopia’s Tigray region, Myanmar and Sudan. He also pointed to how leaders in countries like Russia, Belarus and Nicaragua last year resorted to sham or manipulated “zombie elections” that had no credibility, saying they were exposed in acts “of desperation and weakness.

While fighting has diminished in Ethiopia, he noted that hundreds of thousands of people in Tigray remain on “the brink of starvation” and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has shown no sign of easing a blockade on the region where more than a year-long war has created a devastating humanitarian crisis. But autocrats stumbling is “not going to be enough,” he said. “Democracy is going to have to reinvigorate itself and really rise to the occasion in a way that it hasn’t so far.”

How fleeting choices, circumstances doomed 17 in Bronx fire | AP NewsNEW YORK (AP) — It started as just another January morning, the damp chill prompting a family on the third floor of a drafty Bronx apartment tower to run a space heater for extra warmth, as residents had done countless times before. 'If only the heat inside apartment 3N had been sufficient.' This is not NEARLY enough of a sentence AP. Because apartment 3N wasn't the ONLY place in that building where the heat wasn't 'sufficient'. But you know that. So I'm curious whose bidding your doing, and why? If only the landlords had some kind of accountability. If only we had Universal Basic Income, cradle-to-grave healthcare, safe housing as a human right, and top-notch public education. These should be our national priorities as citizens and human beings, not war and profiteering. That’s what I call liberty and justice for all.
