They are the fastest-growing voting bloc in the country and 115 are running for Congress this year. “Nightline” speaks to one who is running and those working to get out the vote in Texas.
“I’m going to tell you something right now: Women of color can make this happen,” Allison told the women gathered in person and on Zoom from across the country. Aimee Allison is founder of "She the People," which has launched what she says is the first national voter mobilization effort focused exclusively on women of color.
in the Oval Office, I think, was a wake-up call for a lot of women who may have considered running for public office but thought that they didn't quite have enough degrees, they didn't quite have enough qualifications,” she said.“When I moved out to the suburbs of Dallas, I was resigned to thinking that this was just going to be a red area and that we weren't going to see a lot of other changes,” she said. “I was just trying to make a good life for my family.
Her opponent, Beth van Duyne, is a former Trump administration official who calls herself part of a “conservative squad.” Most experts rate this race as a “toss up.” Some view the dueling campaigns as a battle to define the suburban vote. People wait in line to cast their ballots for the upcoming presidential election as early voting begins in Houston, Oct. 13, 2020.
“[He] has essentially known nothing other than this congressional campaign in his entire life,” she said. “And so, like many working moms, I just tried to extract as much value as possible from the little bits of time I had with my kids or with my job.”The mom of two -- her other child is 5 years old -- has shifted to a mostly virtual campaign because of the pandemic. As election day draws nearer, the thought that she could make history is not lost on her.
“Women of color are right in the nexus of the most targeted folks for voter suppression,” Allison said. “In Texas, the early turnout numbers that are really crushing the 2016 numbers is remarkable. This is the way that democracy really is revitalized and gives me a lot of hope.” Voter Swati Narayan told “Nightline” she didn’t expect to “feel this emotional about voting in this election but so much has changed in our country, especially these last four years.”
What about not using color as the main descriptor-black, white-Asian...they come in many colors and shades. Kamala Harris is a mix. How come women, children, latinos, immigrants become important during elections and then forgotten afterwards?
Wrong...
All people on this God’s earth are of color . By using the term “people of color “ it does nothing but further divides this nation and promotes racism. To quote Martin Luther King “ let’s judge a person by their content and not the color of their skin”
Don't know if they mean Black Women or Hispanic women or Asian (they come in all shades n ethnic backgrounds) women, but Women are sure getting feisty, like dancing on stages at a rally, and I surely like it. Laws need to change to protect them, from violence etc! They'll change!
This won’t age well. Biden promises for 47 YEARS. Trump delivered.
“Could prove themselves” ? How do you manage to be so offensive on so many levels?
Please start preparing the public People need to prepare for election week or election month NOT election day Unpredicted numbers are voting during a pandemic Please help prepare citizens
But men of color will break for the Republicans.
Why would “women of color’ automatically vote for the Democrats who think that they are incapable of thinking for and taking care of themselves?
Honestly, is there really that much of a difference be calling them “women of color” of “people of color” & just straight up calling them “colorered”? Why do people continue to politely pretend they don’t notice the most obvious characteristic about someone’s appearance?
Keep trying with your dismal ratings. You guys can’t even get social media numbers
you ain't black.. joe biden
