SAN FRANCISCO - With Facebook’s adoption of permanent remote work on Thursday, Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has untethered one of Silicon Valley’s biggest companies from the place that incubated it.

As lockdowns dragged into their third month, message boards popular with well-paid tech workers have lit up with fantasies of working long-term from tropical beaches and spacious houses in affordable small towns in the Midwest. The company, one of Silicon Valley’s biggest employers, is giving U.S. staffers who are approved to work remotely until Jan. 1, 2021 to update the company on where they plan to base themselves, at which point their salaries will be adjusted to reflect the local cost of living.

Zuckerberg said Facebook will monitor adherence by checking where employees access its VPN. Facebook also uses its own apps' to track employee locations, according to CNBCEven as many tech workers dream of a future in low-tax states, others on message boards fret about how the shift to remote work could exert downward pressure on salaries across the board and warn that being far from headquarters could steepen the climb up the corporate ladder.

It’s common HR practice to have geography differential; otherwise, it’s not fair to the local employees in high living expenses areas

This is a great idea. Some employee in Minneapolis will just get sick of working for him and create the competitor that will finally bury Facebook.

Very interesting

What’s a Facebook? (Jk I deactivated my account like a week ago and I’m already being an elitist about not using Facebook)

Ahhhh...So, employees are paid based on their remote work locations rather than their skills/talent/job requirements. So that FB can increase profits while decreasing staff cost and overheads. Guess to FB, employees are just a liability not assets.

It’s a mystery to me that companies have not done this a lot earlier. They will save so much and we will have less pollution.

Yeah because Suckerberg is so poor!! WhatALoser

Suckerberg. Remember My Space. I will have no problem leaving him behind like those guys who sent me 30 CDs a month. Ameica On Nothing. Remember them? Tell Mark to call me before he Goes to Jared.

Does fb charge advertisers on their platform on a 'per city where the ad is served basis'? If not, then pay the prevailing wage and recoup the difference from not leasing/owning office space. Pay talent, not location. (Yes, I'm aware office space $/psf is about to go negative)

As he, Zuckerberg puts cash in his pockets!🤑

ITS So weird it took a pandemic for them to realize this🤦🏼‍♀️ how stupid are you? You made social media you made the culture to communicate online but made people drive into a building to work on a computer. I’m amazed at how old new businesses act! mindblowing

hahaha, now we see what this was all about

The Economy will return, but to new normal.

This undermines the principle that people who do the same work should be paid the same wages (regardless of geography). Is FB paying for work or are they paying for zipcodes?

Hello citizens of the world, i'd like to invite you all to meet the MATARIFE, the worst crminal ever existed in Colombia / Hola ciudadanos del muindo los invito a conocer al MATARIFE el peor criminal que haya existido en Colombia

F FB.

Tight arses trying to save money 💵

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Sioux Falls is in South Dakota, not Iowa. Surprised you got that wrong as it's a fast growing city and was brought to the public attention due to the Smithfield plant

Only sensible. You can’t get the same pay for working from home considering you’re likely to be less efficient and don’t have any travel costs.

Seriously?! It doesn’t reward by “work level” it rewards by “cost level”?! This means if I work at FB and buy a pricier home I suddenly get a salary increase?! Meanwhile my 10x more productive co-worker who lives in his mom’s basement gets a pay cut for trying to save rent?!

Will Facebook also adjust their salaries to reflect the fact that they're bearing infrastructure costs previously borne by the company?

Hate Facebook and Zuckerberg, but I would chose: 1. Santorini 2. Naxos 3. Sydney

Wtf!?!? Suckerbird is a cheap $$.

I'm in Manhattan now.

Hello VPN!

This is socialist thinking. Trying to scale the price of labor by perceived need instead of paying what that labor is worth

Wow. Sad how multi billion dollar companjes nickle and dime employees. Facebook

More $$$$ for psycho Mark.

This WFH is going to have a whole different meaning

People in the comments section don't understand how salaries are calculated yet want to throw in their 2 cents. Tragic.

Well that’s bullshit.

Can they please offer some job to a person like me..currently in Kenya.....facebook user..

Cheap bastards

Good -has nothing to do with performance, drones .

The amount of work they do has to be adjusted as well then or else wouldn't be fair.

Wow Facebook pay everyone equally at the higher end of the salary range for their job title. No matter what state they live or work in. Corporate Greed at its best. RoArquette Rosie

Wait till they get fired and they hire overseas.

WTF

Facebook has got to be kidding. Their employees work either has a value or it does not. Pay people for their production not what their costs are. This is abhorrent.

Yes, so he can figure out what is the minimum he can get away with paying them.

When asked for a comment Zooidberg said: beep boop bop.

Cheapo.

zuckerberg is such a fkn pig.

in my best 'Ralph' voice..........'Hah Hah'

No you may not take your salaries with you, says the multi-billionaire
