NEW: Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook will start allowing many of its 50,000 employees and new recruits to work from home on a permanent basis, adding to the companies that have embraced decentralized work during the coronavirus pandemic.

"There's a meaningful contrast between what we're doing and what some other companies are doing," Zuckerberg said."This isn't a free-for-all. We're aggressively opening up remote hiring, then ... starting a process where some people, in a phased way, can apply to work remotely."

Recent research from University of Chicago estimated that 37 percent of U.S. jobs can plausibly be performed at home. But the number is significantly higher in areas like Silicon Valley and San Francisco . But just 2 percent of America works from home on a regular basis, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Bloom cited a study showing that employee productivity increases by 13 percent when people work from home, even as other factors like creativity decline."People are able to work well on projects remotely," he said."Where there's an open question is on the softer stuff: alignment, social bonds, creativity."

Remote tools are also becoming a bigger part of Facebook's business. The company recently launched Messenger Rooms, a Zoom competitor, and is also working on new features for Portal, its video hardware device. Facebook said that Workplace, its enterprise communications tool, now has 5 million paying subscribers, up from 3 million in October.

Keeps standard of living the same regardless of location. I don't have a problem with that, the same job in NYC needs to be paid more than in Omaha just to pay rent.

If that is the case they will not need such a large footprint in San Francisco?

God willing, Facebook won’t be around in 2030.

Do the job requirements change accordingly?

What happened to equal pay for equal work?

Umm that’s how that works. $150k in CA is not equivalent to $150K in lower cost of living states.

In other words: Move away from DNC rich areas and you will be fined a percentage of your salary.

Facebook is a puppet of liberal media

Zuckerberg A smart move to adapt to the new world of invisible threats which threaten all of us in every part of the glove, staying healthy and saving lives should be the prime concern of every business to stay open and prosper

Get hired by a company and you supply the workspace, computer, internet connection, and even a desk. You live life like a veal confined 24/7 to the same apartment or room while Silicon Valley overlords save millions on commercial rent. Work is a social and financial experience.

2030🤣 ow god! that is a long time in the tech world

He'll lessen his overhead.....

Other companies are making money at it?

Not to mention it saves billions of dollars not having to construct office space & such, for said people. No infrastructure considerations, no on-site insurance, no parking lots, no cafeterias, no building security. It's all on the employees. Not a bad deal, so why not? Win-win

Personally I wouldn’t mind if it happens earlier. I am also ok if the whole politically driven fb completely disappears tomorrow. There will be no vacuum in social media at all.

Will Mark Zuckerberg wait that long to witness?

bryanrbeal this is what you've been saying for a long time

gee how big of him
