The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is different from the one in 2014 in several ways. Both sides are employing new weaponry and tactics, while the societal and political landscape within Israel, as well as the balance of power in the region, have changed.

, it was the start of the biggest conflict between the two since 2014.

Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since the militant group became the de facto ruler of the Gaza Strip in 2007. The two sides have seen several escalations since then, notably in 2018 and 2019, but avoided war. This time, the conflict is different in several key ways. Both sides are employing new weaponry and tactics, while the societal and political landscape within Israel, as well as the balance of power in the region, have changed.Hamas launched more than 4,000 rockets between May 10 and Monday, according to the Israel Defense Forces. That is an unprecedented rate and more than the 3,383 it launched during the 50 days of fighting in 2014, according to estimates compiled by Michael J.

Israel has responded with more than 1,800 airstrikes in Gaza between the start of the escalation through May 19, according to the United Nations, targeting what it says are Hamas’s military infrastructure and personnel. The Israeli military has said it has killed senior members of the group’s intelligence arm, but its strikes have also exacted a heavy civilian toll, displaced tens of thousands of Palestinians from their homes and razed buildings.
