Here's why Pratt & Whitney’s F135 fighter engine will be the most important military franchise Raytheon Technologies owns:

Share to twitterWhen United Technologies and Raytheon combine later this year, they will form the most broadly diversified, technically proficient aerospace and defense supplier in the world. With $74 billion in sales and 60,000 engineers on staff, the newly minted Raytheon Technologies will be a powerhouse in all of its addressable markets—commercial, civil and military.

Having previously shed commercial units unrelated to its core aerospace capabilities, United Technologies will greatly increase its footprint in the military arena by assimilating a company that Fortune magazine recently ranked as the most respected defense and aerospace enterprise in the world. However, the single most valuable military franchise the merged enterprise possesses will come not from Raytheon, but from the Pratt & Whitney unit of United Technologies. That franchise is the F135 engine, which powers all three variants of the F-35 fighter plus the Air Force’s next-generation B-21 bomber. Combined with other programs in the Pratt portfolio, F135 will make Raytheon Technologies the leading provider of military aircraft propulsion in the world for the foreseeable future.

Pratt’s Geared Turbofan engine may ultimately generate more revenues than the F135 engine, because it is intrinsically more efficient than the conventional turbofans currently used on jetliners around the world . That is a huge market that Pratt & Whitney could ultimately come to dominate by virtue of its head start in operationalizing a transformative propulsion technology. But F135 is transformative too, the most advanced fighter engine that has ever been built.

The same applies to the sea services, which are buying the F-35 fighter in much smaller numbers. They are so overwhelmed by other investment requirements that an offeror would have to devise something truly revolutionary, like a fighter engine supporting an unrefueled combat radius of over a thousand miles, to attract interest from planners. Overseas allies, with less money to spend, are not going to lead the charge to find a replacement of F135.
