Why 1 Main MASH Character Was Missing From The Show (& How This Was Finally Explained)

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT CBS' MASH was missing one integral character from the novels and Robert Altman's 1970 movie. Richard Hornberger's semi-autobiographical fiction MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors was so well-received, that aside from being adapted on the big screen, it was subsequently turned into a TV series that ran for 11 seasons.

Although the general premise of both the shows and movies are the same, with the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War being the focal point of the narrative, there were differences between all three versions of the stories. The novels were detailed, and understandably, couldn't be an exact adaptation on the screen.

Skerritt declined the opportunity to reprise the role in the MASH series, but it indicated that CBS intended to include Forrest. They could have recast the role, much as they did with the majority of the ensemble except for Radar O'Reilly. However, bringing in a third surgeon could have resulted in an overpacked series, which was why CBS didn't pursue it anymore.
