Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Dr. Aphra #35!The battle droids that composed the Separatist Droid Army are an iconic element of the Star Wars Prequel Era, with the incompetent B1 battle droids being the most familiar model – however, the B1 wasn't the only droid proposed to serve as the backbone of the Separatist infantry, and readers of Marvel's Star Wars comics recently received a glimpse of what the Droid Army could have looked like instead.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Star Wars: Dr. Aphra #35 – by Alyssa Wong and Minkyu Jung – continues Star Wars' ongoing "Dark Droids" crossover event, which features the galaxy's droids, its mechanical inhabitants of countless designs and functions, turning against their organic masters. Malevolent AI "the Scourge" has reached out across the galaxy, corrupting and twisting droids toward its goal of galactic conquest.
What If?: A Deadlier Breed of Battle Droid Domina explains that dozens of prototypes for potential Separatist droids were constructed in order to test their viability for mass-manufacturing. Unfortunately, Tagge Corporation's bid lost out Baktoid Combat Automata's B1 models, and Geonisis would become the birthplace of much of the Droid Army.
"Cost and mass manufacturing" is what the Separatists needed for their army. While the Separatist Droid Army would also include more elite models to serve more specialized roles, the Confederacy of System's primary military doctrine was to "levée en masse," using great numbers to overwhelm Republic forces. Individually inept, the B1 was incredibly cheap to produce, and could defeat Jedi given sufficient number.
At the same time, its disc-shaped head and glowing eyes resemble the deadly HMP Droid Gunships deployed later in the war. Despite being produced by various independent Confederate manufacturers, the myriad Separatist droid models maintained some degree of uniformity. Tagge Corporation's droid followed this design ethos – had their bid won, it is likely subsequent models, such as the B2 super-battle droids, and BX commando droids, may have followed the Tagge design.
