Pier 1, GNC and JC Penney are closing hundreds of stores. Dollar General is opening nearly 1,000. See how the coronavirus is upending shopping habits and accelerating the retail apocalypse.

That is more than double the 9,832 stores that closed in 2019, according to Coresight Research. So far this year major U.S. chains have announced more than 5,000 permanent closures.

More buying is shifting online, and consumers are spending less than they did a year ago as they shelter at home, get furloughed or lose their jobs. A growing number of chains that were struggling before the health crisis...

New stores moving in

Maybe in America retail shops will finish, not in European countries that enjoy the human contact, & old fashion timeless kindness in nice diverse shops in high streets.

DollaGen is straight trash. Their stores are full of junk.

We have to rethink other ways to consume in a more sustainable way, it's not the retail apocalypse, maybe it's an opportunity that we must face

People are buying online. It is not just the virus.

We went from JC Pennys to Dollar General in one presidential term. One more term we will be eating at soup kitchens. 😎

Retail apocalypse? Lmfao

Yet JC Penney just gave millions in exec bonuses. Weird.

Or... income inequality is skyrocketing and it’s evident in retail landscape 🤷‍♂️

They were closing lots of stores even before the pandemic. The retail apocalypse started years ago! It has been on YouTube for eons! Don't bother trying to convince us that it was ecommerce, since it was just 10% of all sales before the pandemic. The pandemic just accelerated it.

yellokeith Retail closures look like those were already run badly

IMO these companies were in deep trouble before the virus. COVID-19 is just something convenient to blame it on.

Trumps Economy. We're all broke now...

As they target the newly minted aspirational poor

H&M closes two time 23 stores?

There isn't going to be a 'retail apocalypse'. Every retailer that's shuttered recently was already on their last breath. COVID has become a convenient scapegoat. There will be no apocalypse, but there will certainly be an even greater/swifter shift toward ecommerce.

Walmart to require customers to wear masks at all its storesWalmart will require customers to wear face coverings at all of its namesake and Sam's Club stores, making it the largest retailer to introduce such a policy that has otherwise proven difficult to enforce without state and federal requirements I was in Ithaca NY over 7/4 holiday and a Walmart employee was told by mgmt to just let maskless folks in - even after they turned down a mask. So will mgmt now support front door staff in rejecting maskless customers? $ vs 100% safety? Hum. Good and Smart Business 😷 It's been required in Pa. We have been mandated mask in our city since March
