But the Polo Grounds uptown still touches hearts while having truly disappeared. But the Lincolns played at Olympic Field, which Baker describes as “a small crude long forgotten park” in northern Manhattan, and later at the Catholic Protectory Oval, a still more obscure park, built for an orphanage in the Bronx. Baker is also very good on the extraordinary story of the entrepreneur Alex Pompez and his New York Cubans. Pompez, who represented himself as a cigar tycoon, in fact made his fortune in the numbers racket.
