In 1900, the Michelin Guide published its first list of recommended restaurants. The small red booklet was given to drivers in an effort to encourage car travel and promote the company’s tires—a marketing ploy, essentially. But the guide has grown into a thriving business, and after more than a century, Michelin is arguably the most important culinary authority in the world.

We can do all that without compromising the independence of the Michelin selections. revenue contributes to financial or editorial investment, which is quite huge. In terms of full-time employees, paying the bills, salaries, travel expenses, and cars—my editorial expenses are bigger than some of the largest newspapers in the world.
