Take Vitamin E. The substance is touted as an antioxidant—a chemical that can prevent or slow cell damage caused by of more than 50 peer-reviewed studies, the frequent use of diets or cleanses focused on detoxifying and/or a fear of eating toxins was identified as a risk factor for orthorexia nervosa. The disorder, which involves an unhealthy preoccupation with healthy eating, has yet to make its way into the DSM, the diagnostic manual of record. But it’s increasingly being recognized and treated by eating disorder specialists.
