found that between 2010 and 2014, 94.6% of visitors to national forests identified as white. People who identified as Latino made up 5.7%, and those who identified as Black made up 1.2%.
Protests had swept the nation in the wake of the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor. Thousands of Americans took to the streets, outraged by the continued disregard for the lives of Black people. This time the response was much bigger. “People just cared more all of a sudden,” Jackson said. More than 600 people reached out and asked for camping kits.
The disparity in access to the outdoors is particularly frustrating to Harris, who pointed out that those who could most benefit from being in a rural environment have often felt excluded. “Being in nature is healing,” she said. “People who need that healing most are Black and Indigenous people, and the idea that it’s inaccessible … it’s just not right.”
“Mo and their team wanted to step up; we are just thrilled to support them and help more people get outside,” said Deek Heykamp, another co-owner. The kits assembled with Next Adventure cost $200 to $250. Abreu received a BIPOC Camping Kit in June. “I’m really impressed. It’s clearly high quality and something I will be able to use again and again.”
These lunatics wake up every morning, hoping to find something to get offended and triggered by and post something like this.
eBay: 2-person tent: $24 Sleeping bag: $12 Plastic cooler: $14 This article chose unnecessarily expensive equipment for its price points. It’s like arguing driving is racist because Corvettes are $60,000.
Yea some people wanna shoot up the place, makes for an unenjoyable experience
😂
This is one of the dumbest stories, piggybacking one of the other dumbest stories. ABC did this first by asking the dumb question...Is the great outdoors racist? Then went on to show statistics that match up perfectly with the % of pop. that is Black=the % of Black pop. using NPs
The cost of gear shouldn't be a focus, it should be that non-white people regularly can't afford a fairly inexpensive hobby. I really like that people are starting to understanding this is an issue though.
Ignorance again. Can you afford a yacht? Neither can I.
So when someone asks for proof that racism isn't so bad, I'm going to show them this article as proof.
Over 60+ years I went from pup tents and surplus Army blanket sleeping bag to... Wish I hadn't.
The fuck you on about
Absolutely!!!
*cough* *cough* Big Five Sporting Goods Daily Sales *cough* *cough*
you’ll legit make anything about race won’t you
healthcare pls
Of course a white woman made this article. Thanks for speaking on behalf of Mexicans like myself and assuming we're all poor to camp.
Must you diversify everything?! Don’t wanna camp? Don’t camp!
Black people can’t afford $250? This is the most racist article of the year.
You can FaceTime somebody on your iPhone, but you can't spend your money on camping gear. Those are priorities.
Camping is racist
Go to any public park for a hike, in the Deep South no less, I see people of all races who, like me, wanted to get out & enjoy some nature. I know there are lots more people of all races who’d rather sit on their ass in the ac all day. Also this article is reductive to poc innit?
wants you to know that all black people are poor and have no hope of achieving anything on their own without charity.
If you want to do something then learn to save? Outrageous right Lol
No. Also GFY with these ridiculous takes. If POC want to get out there they can.
Wait till the LA Times finds out about how racist spelunking is!
Meanwhile, church goers are not permitted to sing, rioters and looters use race as an excuse, and your governor is a fascist.
Nah, you can’t have an outrage audience if you’re out in the woods by yourself
You're fuckin kidding me....
Hey LA times, the Enquirer said they want their reporters back.
Stop. Stop now.
I live in LA and see homeless black people living in tents everywhere.
Cultural appropriation! Camping is for white people! Stay in your lane!
I Kent think it’s the gear that’s stopping people from camping. Camping gear is also the top 5 things people regret buying after a treadmill.
No offense but I don't see how camping gear is not diverse it's not made for whites lol
Camping is when the hotel doesn't have 24hr room service
Shut up.
Me: Diversity and camping don't belong in the same sentence. 2020 LA TIMES:
Homeless are broke as shit and camp every day. Get a clue
This may possibly be the stupidest thing currently on the entire internet. Good god, how pathetic
How about bringing the boyscouts back from the dead? Some of my favorite camping experiences was with a diverse set of friends. We learned so much and my female scout master was phenomenal!
I’m guessing no one at the LA Times has gone camping in an actual tent overnight... ever
Chacebeech This is the dumbest shit I've ever read. Stop forcing diversity on us.
This is such horseshit. A canteen does not care.
Goddamn it why does being black have to do with everything 🐒🚫
I didn’t bother to read this article, but Walmart sells cheap, useable camping gear. My white husband’s went camping growing up b/c of the low cost. My Mex-Am parents didn’t take us kids camping b/c their parents didn’t take them camping... it wasn’t b/c of the cost.
So how do all the homeless people, surrounding the LA Times in “camps” have all their gear?
Ummm I disagree... I’m a POC and cost is the least of my worries. Bugs and the inability to shower for days are up there in reasons 🤢
EntoAriel I think you’d be into this story ⛺️
Camping isnt racist. It's just staying outside. Relax
This article made me laugh hysterically. Although, I do feel sorry for those who find racism at literally every turn in life. It's a bit of mental illness.
Not reading this
Chacebeech This photo was taken a few blocks from the LA Times. If the homeless can camp, anyone can camp. Stop trying to divide people.
Who says they even want to camp? You are trying to fuel more racial tension. This isn’t news/journalism! This is propaganda !
So you are calling black people poor?
LA has the MOST diverse camping in its downtown streets. Why don't you worry about that instead?
I think youre confusing camping with summerin’ in the Hamptons. Camping is the official sport of poor white trash, other than a tent you can do it with things you already own. Encouraging diversity is great but this article is way off the mark.
Nope. Not really. I just camp.
It sounds kind of racist to assume black people don't camp because they can't afford camping supplies.
Shut up LA Times
Nope, not needed.
What a stupid article. 🙄🙄
Maybe the difference in population density of Black Americans vs White Americans in geographic areas that Camping is most popular is different than the density ratio where camping is least popular? Do people in a Big City go camping as often as people in Rural communities?
Hey maybe they should loot the outdoors/sporting goods stores and they won’t have to pay a penny.
Camping, fishing, hunting all typically require a permit or license to participate. As you know, our community can’t be expected to get or maintain even a drivers license. That’s what’s racist, the fact permits or licenses is required.
This was written by an urbanite wasn’t it?
I seriously don’t want people trying to get me to go camping. My parents have plenty of disposable income. trust me, it’s not the cost that’s keeping brothers from camping.
I always pack Goya.
If you can read this and have white guilt, Venmo me a donation as a symbol of your guilt, and I will dispose of it with good vibes. The more you send, the more you are cleansed. Namaste 🙏🏽
Case and point that the demand for racism far exceeds the supply.
If they wanted to camp... wouldn’t they be looting more REI stores. Only white folk running up in them. Not many RedWingShoes store being looted either. Why’s that? Work is racist too
This article is beyond my expectation 🙄🙄
This is the dumbest fucking article I've ever read.
anyone can camp. Theres litteraly only one step... Go outside.
Jesus more click bait. Just what America needed.
This is exhausting.
You know you’re a joke of a news source right. All the issues in the world and this is what you take the time to write about?
This might be the dumbest article I’ve read all day.
More diversity is needed in luxury home and automobile ownership! Where do I sign-up?
I have literally camped with less that $100 of “gear”.
Aside from the gear is the reality that it’s scary enough to be black in America living in the city, let alone if you’re out in the wilderness
Bullshit propaganda
No, definitely don’t want more diversity in camping. Let it remain a white folk activity the black folks like to ridicule. We’re fine with that.
Get a load of this stupid ass article
No thanks, I like the forest quiet as it is.
what?
great. identity camping. the LAT is just hopeless.
Speechless Steve. That’s unusual
Verizon do you hear me now 🙌🏼🗽💯
Buy Black ProductsTM
I was just thinking about this! Every since marcuslemonis gifted our family with a ThorMotorCoach from CampingWorld, we've been searching for diversity in the products we buy to GoRVing but we're having a tough time finding anything.
I asked this question last week, concerning transformations in the housing market due to the pandemic, how many RV sites, trailer parks, modular housing sites and tiny home manufacturers have equitable hiring practices and ownership structures in place? Black/BIPOC owners?
