“Thanksgiving is a special day, and we want our store associates to have the chance to spend it with their families and loved ones. We have so much to be thankful for, and I’m especially grateful for our associates,” he said.
Closing stores on the holiday began during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to show thanks for their hard work.Other stores that will be closing include Target, ALDI, Costco, Lowe's, Home Depot, Kohl's and Sam's Club. Target's CEO, Brian Cornell, echoed a similar sentiment and said the decision was made in consideration of the well-being of employees.
"What started as a temporary measure driven by the pandemic is now our new standard — one that recognizes our ability to deliver on our guests' holiday wishes both within and well beyond store hours," Cornell said. "You don't have to wonder whether this is the last Thanksgiving you'll spend with family and friends for a while, because Thanksgiving store hours are one thing we won't 'get back to' when the pandemic finally subsides.
