Tents and graffiti are seen in the Quad on the University of Washington campus on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. regarding the encampment within five days, and it directly addressed the offensive graffiti that was seen across nearly 30 buildings on the school's campus Wednesday morning. UW continued to say the language used in the graffiti is creating an "unwelcome and fearful environment for many students.
The UW's statement said that while the encampment wasn't initially a disruption to student's learning, activities, and operation, some of the rhetoric eventually devolved into "vile and antisemitic" speech.. The students formally asked for the university to divest itself of ties to Boeing and Israel. The hour-long public testimony included multiple students and chants of “Free Palestine” from the capacity crowd inside a UW campus meeting room.
The school responded by calling the following demands "contrary to academic freedom as well as both state and federal law." The ADL's statement continued to say they've received multiple reports regarding antisemitic vandalism and Jewish students being blocked from entering the quad due to the encampments. The ADL claimed this was due to inaction by the administration.
