UT Austin laid off 49 faculty due to Texas' DEI ban; President Hartzell noted shifting legislative climate and aim to mitigate future risks.

Tue, April 16th 2024 at 5:10 PM"My role is to worry about the long-run future of the university," UT Austin President Jay Hartzell said in a Faculty Council meeting on Monday, "thinking about not only what had to happen by January, but as this plays out in the coming months and years, how am I doing the best I can to mitigate what I believe and many others believe are real and imminent risks.

Hartzell also disclosed that 49 faculty members were laid off as a result of the closure of the Division of Campus and Community Engagement, which was announced two weeks ago. He said those faculty members will continue to be on the payroll of the university until July 5, and would receive special consideration if any future jobs open.
