A US appeals court puts Turkiye's state lender Halkbank case proceedings on hold so the bank can exercise its right to appeal in the Supreme Court

Halkbank, the second largest state-run financial institution in Turkey, was at the centre of a legal battle in 2017 when it was accused of breaching a US sanctions law that forbids doing business with Iran.

Friday's order from the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan allows Halkbank to appeal without having to defend against the criminal case at the same time. It expressed no view on the merit of an appeal. The US Attorney's Office in Manhattan and US-based lawyers for Halkbank did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Halkbank said that decision conflicted with Supreme Court precedents as it "greenlights the first criminal trial of a foreign sovereign in the nation's history."
